Summer Theatre Camp

Boston Patio Playhouse is now registering for its summer programs!

The Backyard Opera Summer Program is open to students ages 12 – 18 who love opera, operetta, and classic musical theater. The program runs weekdays July 6th – 17th, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

The Front Porch Players Musical Theater Summer Program is for students ages 12 – 16 who love classic and contemporary musical theater. The program runs weekdays, August 3rd – 14th,  9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

During each two-week program students will receive training in voice, dance, drama, and backstage skills, while working on either an Opera Gala or a Broadway Musical Revue performance! No auditions necessary, and each student will be cast as a soloist. Both programs are located in Coolidge Corner, Brookline. STEM Summer Camp

STEM Summer Camp, run by the Studio of Engaging Math in Brighton, offers four one-week summer sessions for kids 6 – 12 years old. Days are 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (extended day also available) and include daily playground time and weekly museum field trips. Activities include design challenges, construction sets, science experiments, strategy games, brain teasers, origami, 3D modeling software and introduction to programming.

Are you thinking about ways to save on your energy costs while reducing your carbon footprint?

The Newton Solar and Home Energy Fair will include information on the various state and federal incentives available to homeowners. You can also learn how the city is taking advantage of solar and meet with a number of installers to see what might work for your home.

Representatives of many solar companies will be there, as well as organizations which can help with energy efficiency and financing for efficiency and renewable energy. There will even be providers with options for homeowners who may not be able to host solar on their own roofs, but are looking to support and use renewable energy.

Electric Car Event

If you’ve been curious about what it means to have en electric car, this is the event to attend! The Sierra Club and Newton Solar Challenge invite you to attend the ‘EV+PV Event’. Electric car owners will be on hand to talk about their experience and to answer questions you may have about owning an ‘EV’. Representatives from Newton Solar Challenge will also be present to talk about the possibilities of combining EV and solar (PV) for the ultimate in reducing your costs and your carbon footprint.

Short Film contest for High School students

During the week of February 15th – 22nd, NewTV will be holding a Short Film Challenge. Each team of students will receive guidelines for their film during a kickoff event at NewTV on February 15th. All work on the film will be done during that week, since they will not know the parameters until the kickoff event. The top three films will be screened at a special event in the NewTV screening room and they will be featured during the Newton Festival of the Arts in May. The first place team will receive an additional prize. Registration is open from now until February 14th. For more information and to register, contact jo**@***tv.org.   • Tutor a 2nd – 5th grade child in basic mathematics concepts once a week
    for 30-45 minutes.
  • Select your preferred school, grade, day, and time.
  • Play special math games that reinforce skills and help students gain
    confidence and competence.
  • Training, Everyday Math books and learning materials, and ongoing support
    are provided.
  • No teaching experience is needed.

Ebola Relief Benefit

The Ebola Relief Benefit afternoon will include music, African crafts, creative activities for all ages and refreshments. Children will have the opportunity to make get well cards which will be delivered by Partners in Health to patients recovering from Ebola in West Africa.

Other Highlights of the day include:

  • a Pete Seeger tribute inter-generational sing-along at 3:00 pm with Joe Pete and Ruth Rappaport
  • an Interfaith Concert for Hope and Healing at 7:00 pm featuring the Lovetones, Dukpay
  • Drumming and Dance with performers from Liberia, Rimonim youth choir of Temple Emanuel and Koleinu Community Chorus.

Her Conference: High School

Her Campus Media is hosting the second annual Her Conference: High School  at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. HerCampus.com is the #1 online community for college women and, along with local college admissions experts and current college students, are thrilled to share experience and knowledge with high school students as they prepare to apply and matriculate to college.

The conference is open to high school students and their parents and will cover everything they need to know to get ready for college!
