Girls Who Code instructors needed

The Newton ‘Girls Who Code’ club is recruiting software engineers and computer scientists to volunteer as instructors for the 2015-2016 school year. The club serves girls in grades 6-12 and aims to inspire, educate, and equip them with computing skills for the 21st century.

They meet for 2 hours each week, and follow a curriculum published by the national Girls Who Code organization. They work in Scratch, JavaScript, AppInventor, and HTML/CSS, to build a range of projects from graphics to video games to artificial intelligence to cryptography. They also host guest speakers, go on field trips, and develop soft skills like collaborating and presenting your work. Club volunteers are passionate about closing the gender gap in technology and getting girls into this rewarding field.

The Newton Free Library currently hosts two club sections with over 30 girls. Hoping to expand to a third section for 2015-2016 and host up to 60 girls, they need more volunteer instructors to do so. Nourish Film Screening

Join a screening and discussion of the documentary film Nourish .This FREE event is open to the public. The film is rated PG and intended for middle & high schoolers and their families.

Nomadic Theater presents

Bikes not Bombs

Do you have an old or unused bike? Donate it to Bikes Not Bombs, a local non-profit that ships bikes overseas to support economic development. Kesher Newton is now enrolling for this Fall​!

Kesher is a pluralistic Jewish after school program held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for grades K-5. Kesher emphasizes joyful, hands-on Jewish learning which includes modern Hebrew, Judaic studies, and fun-filled electives. Is your child interested in exploring and expanding their artistic side? Whether he or she is a young arts and crafts lover or an older more serious creator, she will work with them one on one to help them further their skills and knowledge, creative thinking, and develop a personal artistic language. She will design a unique lesson plan specific to your child’s interests. Possible session topics may include painting, watercolor, ink drawing, figure drawing, collage, multi-media painting, sketch-booking, clay work, book making and book binding, jewelry making (from beading to designing fine metal pieces), and sustainable crafts and sculpture.

Newton Community Preservation Committee meeting

Public Hearing on Supplemental $400,000 for Museum Archives Project

The CPC meeting on May 14th, starting at 7:00 pm in City Hall Room 204, includes a public hearing on the Museum Archives project (Historic Newton/Jackson Homestead), which has received $742,345 and is requesting an additional $400,000.
