Newton Mothers’ Forum Mothers’ Night Out!

Newton Mothers’ Forum is thrilled to announce the Keynote Speaker for the evening will be Dr. Jean Kilbourne, Author/Speaker/Filmmaker. Dr. Kilbourne is an internationally recognized expert on addictions, gender issues, and the media. She has been described as “a superstar lecturer” by The Boston Globe and has spoken at about half of all the colleges and universities in the U.S. and many conferences. Her first film, “Killing Us Softly: Advertising’s Image of Women” is among the most popular educational films of all time and is the topic of her presentation for NMF. She is also a well-known author, with titles such as “So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids” and “Can’t Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel.” In recognition of her important work, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in October. Community Messiah Sing

Join us to sing the Christmas section of Handel’s Messiah, and the Hallelujah Chorus! With Jeffrey Mills on the organ, Conductor Kyrah Rodriguez, plenty of scores and first-rate soloists – all that’s needed is a chorus of joyous voices!

So come and sing. All voices and listeners are welcome!

Is your child in grades 6 – 8?

The Project CARY (Cognitions, Affect, and Regulation in Youths) Team at Harvard is seeking youths and their parent/caregiver to participate in a paid study.

What is this project about?
The team is looking at past life experiences, the development of youths’ emotions and self-regulation, and the role these things play in how youths cope with and respond to typical types of stress experienced in daily life. Participating in this project may help them to
better understand how youths’ emotional and cognitive development and their life
experiences influence one other. They hope that this information will help understanding of what factors promote youths’ positive emotional health and cognitive development.

What does your participation involve?
You and your child will be asked to visit the laboratory at Harvard University for a session that will last up to two hours. You and your child will fill out some forms, and your child will participate in a number of activities, some of which are on the computer. You will be compensated $50 and your child will be compensated $30. Travel reimbursement may be available.

Tutor/Coach available

Tutor/Coach, retired from the Wellesley Public Schools and currently working at MassBay Community College, is available to tutor K-5th grade reading, writing and math. Book Discussion of Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be

College admissions has become an increasingly frenetic and pressured process. While our high schools in Newton have developed a college planning philosophy designed to support students and families, the energy, angst and resources devoted to the process can push some students and their families to the brink.

What should we do about a phenomenon that can feel out of control? Join Newton Superintendent of Schools, David Fleishman, and a panel of experts in the admissions process as they discuss key themes from Frank Bruni’s book, Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be.

The panelists will include:

An evening with Amy Cuddy

An Evening with Amy Cuddy at the Druker Auditorium: Learn how to take on all of life’s challenges with more presence! You have probably seen Amy Cuddy’s TED talk online (over 29 million people have!). Now you have a chance to see your Newton neighbor do an onstage workshop for members of the community, along with a special performance by the student musicians of the West Suburban YMCA Center for the Creative Arts (YCCA).
