Newton Youth Hockey has opened registration for its Co-ed Middle School Hockey program. These are games-only teams open to any Newton resident in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade. Participants do not need to attend a Newton school, nor do they need to be current Newton Youth Hockey players.

With modifications or reductions in music instruction at many schools, a lot of students might opt to take private music lessons. Gabriel Mininberg, an experienced music teacher with a degree in Music from Yale University and a certificate in jazz studies from the New England Conservatory can teach students of all ages and levels in saxophone, guitar, music theory, jazz improvisation, composition, and ear training. He has taught students in the New Haven Public Schools (K-12), coached performing ensembles, and helped direct the New Haven All-City Jazz Big Band.

Researchers at McLean Hospital are recruiting female teens who are currently feeling depressed or down as well as female teens who are not feeling depressed/down. Your teen can earn up to $100.00 and receive a picture of her brain.
Researchers at McLean Hospital are investigating factors that make some teens better able to cope with stressful experiences and what makes some teens more vulnerable to experiencing depression. By participating, you and your child can help them better understand, prevent, and treat adolescent depression. Teens will answer questions about their thoughts and feelings. Teens will also undergo an fMRI brain scan. Parent permission is required for teens under 18.

1. Commonwealth Ave Carriageway proposal to create two-way bike travel on the Carriageway; right now biking is only formally allowed for those traveling west.

The Newton Highlands Neighborhood Area Council is hosting a virtual pumpkin carving/decorating contest as a replacement for their usual “Halloween at the Hyde” Haunted House event. Gift cards to local sweet shop, Indulge!, will be awarded to top entries in each of three categories: Scariest – Funniest – Most Original.

Lumos is offering weekly debate club programs online through Zoom on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays! Your child will build confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and get lots of public speaking practice. Students will meet once a week to learn new techniques, practice their speeches, and work one-on-one with their coaches.

LigerBots have created a free online mentor/tutoring program this fall.
In order to offer more support to elementary students–as well as provide teaching opportunities to high schoolers– they’ve created an online program in which they pair high school mentors with elementary kids over an online platform (Zoom, Google Hangouts, Facetime, etc.)
Mentors could tutor, provide homework help, or just play games and do crafts with younger students and they believe that this is an amazing opportunity for high school students to gain teaching experiences and help younger students through these trying times. Many elementary students have signed up and are in need of high school mentors. Please help us spread the word!
