High School Start Time Forum – October 19th at 7:00 pm

On Wednesday, October 19th, the district will host a community forum on potential changes to the high school start time. The forum is an opportunity for you to provide your feedback on the positive and negative impacts of a start time change. Several potential scenarios will be presented. Some change only the high school hours. Others change school hours at all schools. The working group’s year-end report can be found on the district website. Potential scenarios can be found here. Newton South Stage Presents “Bat Boy: The Musical”

Get in the mood for Halloween by coming to see South Stage’s Bat Boy: The Musical!

Bat Boy: The Musical was inspired by a series of tabloid headlines published in 1992 by The Weekly World News claiming that a terrifying creature, half-man and half-bat, had been discovered in a cave, escaped, and was being pursued by government officials. With a beat-driven rock score that pays homage to the rock musicals of the late ’60s and early ’70s, Bat Boy provides a compelling theatrical metaphor for the dangers of prejudice, intolerance, and provincialism.

Harvest Fair

The 42nd annual Harvest Fair is a two day event on the Newton Center Green:

  • Saturday, October 15th, has kiddie rides and face painting
  • Sunday, October 16th from 10:00 am –5:00 pm is the Craft Show, Green Expo, Free Pumpkin Decorating and all of the fabulous entertainment. The entertainment begins with Newton’s young musical talent The Dominoes and Jared and the Giants – two fabulous middle school bands you won’t want to miss, followed by Martial Arts, Dance Performances by local dance studios, the YCCA Rock Band and a performance by the amazing students of the Suzuki School of Newton. Closing out the afternoon, are three terrific local bands: The Highlands Conservatory Band- instructors from the local Conservatory of Music; Loose Change – a rock band of Newton educators, and Spicolli’s- yet another talented Newton band.

The favorites at Harvest Fair on Sunday are still there…free pumpkin decorating, kiddie amusement rides, the 150 different craft and business booths selling everything from hand-made beautiful jewelry, clothing to imaginative gifts, and the Green Expo, sponsored by Green Newton, with exhibitors offering solutions for reducing your carbon footprint. As always, gotta have great food and they do!

“Meet the Author”

Parents, Children and Teachers Are Invited to “Meet the Author” at Understanding Our Differences’ Family Book Event. Join UOD to welcome Kimberly Brubaker Bradley to Newton! She will discuss and sign her award-winning middle grade novel, The War That Saved My Life, a story of triumph against all odds by a girl with a physical disability, set during World War II. Patti Karam, Library Teacher at Horace Mann Elementary School, will be our event moderator.
