Dance for a Great Cause!

All Newton Public Schools families and kids are invited to register for the first annual Newton South Dance Marathon to raise money for Boston Children’s Hospital. The Dance Marathon, organized by Newton South’s Raise A Smile Club, will include performances by SASA’s Zamaana, Newtones, KungFu, and Brown Middle School’s DEAFinitely as well as food, raffles, tattoos, face painting, and, or course, dancing!

The Monologue Project: Voices of Color

“I wanted to share in the telling of stories of people of color in our community. A long overdue opportunity to reaffirm that yes, we are here.”- Student performer, The Monologue Project: Voices of Color, 2017.

Join Newton Theatre Company, in partnership with Newton North High School, Newton South High School and Newton Department of Health and Human Services, as it brings back to the stage for the second year in a row The Monologue Project: Voices of Color! Similarly to last year, this show is part of a Festival of the Arts in Newton.

The Monologue Project promises to be a unique and inspiring event, showcasing Newton students of color as they perform their own original prose and poetic writing. The show will be followed by a talkback with the performers. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of this artistic, community event and to support Newton youth as they share their stories.

The show runs June 1st – 3rd with two evening performances June 1st and 2nd and one afternoon performance June 3rd. Admission to the show is free and there is no need to get tickets beforehand. More information can be found at www.NewtonTheatreCompany.com

Time for Partners – Summer!

The popular art & music class for children ages 18 months to 4 years with an adult is thriving in the Newton Cultural Center at City Hall!

A terrific way to learn, have fun and make friends – and that’s not just for the kids! Parents, nannies and grandparents enjoy this long-running program also. Children make creative and enriching art projects and enjoy singing and fun with beloved performer David Polansky.

The classes fill up very quickly, so don’t wait! The summer program is on Tuesdays from July 10th – August 14th, and the Thursday classes are July 12th – August 16th.

Opera Camp: How to Create an Opera

VOICES Boston and Boston Lyric Opera are offering Opera Camp to singers entering 3rd-8th grade in the 2018-2019 school year.

Learn to create your own musical and try each step along the way! Write your own lyrics and songs. Create sets, costumes, and props. Rehearse and perform your world premiere. Play theater games, act, sing, draw, design and more!

Newton’s 1st Annual PorchFest

PorchFest is an afternoon of free music performed outside of people’s homes. Over 100 cities across the country hold PorchFests. Now Newton is holding one too, starting in Auburndale, with hopes the event spreads to include more Newton villages next year.

This is an all-ages event!

Over 60 musical acts (dancers and storytellers too) are scheduled to perform. There’ll be a diverse line up of local talent from country to pop, classical, reggae, blues, rock, jazz, Latin, R&B, and more.

Bring a chair or a blanket and appreciate music performed on a unique venue, the front porch, (driveways and lawns too!) Parking is available on the Comm. Ave carriage lane, the municipal lot behind The Village Bank, the lot at the Cove, and around Lasell College. Please be mindful of the narrow streets; strolling is the name of the game.
