Spring Improv Jam at Newton North, April 24

Newton North’s Theatre Ink presents the Spring Improv Jam, a showcase performance of the students who attend its Improv Club.

The players combine Improv games and audience inspirations to create a fun filled  performance. Join the fun — come see the show!

Drop off donations for Cradles to Crayons, April 28

Newton Girl Scouts in conjunction with Newton Serves, is organizing a clothing, book and toy drive for Cradles to Crayons, a local organization that distributes new & gently-used items to more than 15,000 kids –in-need in Massachusetts.

Donations can be dropped off at City Hall on Newton Serves Day: Sunday April 28th from 9:00 – 3:00.  This is a great time to do some spring cleaning and help children in need by providing items essential for their safety, education or warmth.

Please make certain items are clean, with no stains or tears.  Donations are tax deductible.

Russian Cultural Festival, April 19-21

A three-day “From Russia With Arts and Culture” Russian Festival returns to the Newton Cultural Center for a second year from April 19 – 21, with a weekend packed full of Russian artists, musicians, food, dances, costumes, demonstrations and a film screening and discussion.

The Festival opens on Friday, April 19th from 5pm – 9pm with a painting exhibition from the From Russia With Art Gallery, and musical performances including soprano Yelena Dudochkin and violinist Vera Rubin. There will be appetizers from local Russian restaurants and the screening of the award-winning film “Second Life – Boston”.

On Saturday from 10am – 7pm and Sunday from noon – 6pm, you can fully immerse yourself in Russian culture with discussions, demonstrations, stories, songs, dances, fashion and jewelry shows and browse unique Russian souvenirs for sale.

The Festival is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs and Newton Community Pride and their generous sponsors. Admission is free, but please bring a donation for the Newton Food Pantries.

Volunteers needed for Newton at Home

Newton at Home (NAH) is a non-profit member organization that helps Newton senior citizens live independently and safely in their homes.  Most of the services are provided by volunteers, and so we need your help.  We need drivers and those who can do chores around the house for seniors who can’t do these things on their own.

NAH is also looking for help with the upcoming Intergenerational Walk Around Newton City Hall, Sunday, April 14th at 10:30 am.  Volunteers are needed to line the route, help with warm-up exercises, etc.  Please contact NAH today to volunteer: 617-795-2560 or by email.

Come share your creations with a booth at Waban Village Day, Sunday, May 19, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. This is the 9th Waban Village Day and it takes place in Waban Square on Woodward Street, right off of Beacon Street. This is a very popular event, fun for the whole family, with over 2,000 people participating in rides, food and crafts and local entertainment. Newton Community Farm Seeking Students for High School Summer Intern Program

Newton Community Farm (303 Nahanton Street, Newton) is now accepting inquiries for our High School Summer Intern program. Summer internships are unpaid opportunities for high school students to learn about organic and community farming in a fun, friendly environment. No experience is necessary, just a desire to learn and work hard. Minimum requirement for the internship is 8AM to 12PM, two days per week for two weeks, but can expand up to five days per week (Tuesday through Saturday) for as many weeks as you like. Magic Flutes Concert – Saturday, March 9, 11AM, at Waban Library Center

Magic Flutes is an ensemble of writing my essay young flutists from Newton, Mass. who study flute and ensemble performance with longtime Waban resident, Deborah Charness. On March 9 at 11am, they will present their 4th annual concert at Waban Library Center, located at 1608 Beacon Street in Newton. For this performance, they will be joined by flutists Lynne Krayer-Luke, and Mindy Scharlin. Magic Flutes is named after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Opera of the same name. Magic Flutes has performed at such venues as the Cartoon Festival in Symphony Hall, Boston, The Newton Free Library, Cabot Park Village, Russell’s Garden Center, and Whole Foods Market.
Coffee is provided by Starbucks of Waban Square, and refreshments by Whole Foods Market.
Suggested donation is $5 per person, or $10 per family. All proceeds benefit the Waban Library Center (WLC). The WLC is staffed completely by volunteers and funded solely by private donations.
