It’s that time of year when the Waban Improvement Society is gearing up for its annual holiday tree lighting festivities to take place on December 8th, at 4:30 pm right in front of Starbucks in Waban Square. As part of the festivities, the Newton Family Singers will lead the community in singing some great holiday songs. Please join the fun!!!
In addition, they will hold an open community rehearsal on Wednesday, December 4th at 7:00 pm, at the Waban Library Center. Celebrate Newton, Newton’s own holiday crafts fair, is around the corner!

There’s live music, a kids crafts table, food, and most importantly, a host of fabulous artists and craftspeople, most of whom are your Newton neighbors. For the sixth consecutive year, The Village Bank will partner with the City of Newton Department of Health and Human Services for the annual Holiday Gift Drive, to help brighten the holidays for deserving Newton children.
The Bank and the City are encouraging local residents, businesses and organizations to play an active role in the Holiday Gift Drive through donations of gift certificates and new, unwrapped gifts for children ages newborn to 10.
The Village Bank’s Newton branches in Auburndale, Newtonville, Nonantum, Newton Highlands, Waban and West Newton will serve as Holiday Gift Drive collection sites. Donations will be accepted from November 25 through December 17.
Suggested gifts include age-appropriate books, CDs and DVDs, clothing, games, sporting goods, and toys. The donation of gift certificates purchased from local merchants will also benefit businesses in the community.
According to Kenneth C. Brennan, president and CEO of The Village Bank, last year’s Holiday Gift Drive touched more than 200 local families. “We are always happy to do what we can to help others,” said Brennan, “but it is the overwhelming support of the community that makes this particular campaign so rewarding each year. That really makes all the difference.”
Meghan Kennedy, community social worker for the City of Newton, said that every income-eligible family who applied last year was provided with age- and gender-appropriate gifts for the children in their family, thanks to the generosity of others.
Two gift-laden church bazaars will be held in West Newton Square within a block of one another: at the First Unitarian Society (1326 Washington St.) and Second Church, UCC (60 Highland St.) where the Bazaar opens a half hour early, at 9 am.
Both the Unitarian Fair and the Second Church Bazaar will offer a wide variety of merchandise for holiday shopping, including jewelry, seasonal items, books, toys, small furniture and household goods.There will be homemade sweet treats and decorated wreaths. Both churches will feature a Silent Auction. Hot lunches are available at either site, plan to enjoy a lunch at one of the churches. Free parking is available for all patrons in Second Church’s Highland and Chestnut Street lots.
