Free Summer Music program

Boston Music Institute is offering a FREE morning orchestra program this August at Driscoll School in Brookline. There will be three, week-long sessions, and students may sign up for one, two or three weeks.

BMI also offers optional, low-cost afternoon small ensembles and SAT/SSAT/ACT prep classes. The free large ensemble runs 9:30 am to Noon and is for Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion – ages 8 to 19.

The goal of this program is to provide students from beginning through advanced-intermediate instrumental ability with a rigorous and fun ensemble playing experience, taught by high-level instructors from BMI, in order to grow and develop their individual musicianship and group playing. Free Summer STEM program

Free summer STEM prep program for High School students includes classes in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, Robotics, and Maker Space.

Classes run from Monday – Wednesday each week with field trips every Thursday. Breakfast and lunch is provided every day, free of charge. Flyer can be seen STEM. For more information and to apply visit http://www.rcc.mass.edu/

The Mayor’s Office for Cultural Events and Newton Community Pride present FREE summer concerts! Bring a blanket/chair and enjoy live music under the night summer sky!

Steve Matthews* Shooting Clinic

The clinic will include all aspects of the game of basketball. There will be lectures, drills, contests, and games and attendees will learn how to shoot with perfect form.

*Steve Matthews, currently the Head Varsity Basketball Coach at Newton South High School,  finished his college playing career fifth all-time in the history of the NCAA basketball in three point field goal percentage and three point field goals made. He made well over 100 three point field goals per season at Northeastern University and Emerson College. In his only two seasons at Emerson College, Steve scored 1,139 points. Steve has worked individually with countless grade school, middle school, high school and college basketball players on improving their basketball skills. If you want to improve your shooting ability, this is the clinic for you. Open to Newton boys entering grades 4-9 next fall.  $299 per attendee.

Summer Weekend Sports Clinics

This summer Viking Sports is offering weekend soccer, baseball/t-ball, and basketball clinics in Brookline, Chestnut Hill, Sudbury, and Wayland. The Brookline programs will be held at Waldstein Park on Saturday mornings and will feature both soccer and baseball/t-ball clinics. On Sundays, they’ll be offering basketball clinics at the Soule Gym as well as advanced basketball classes on Sunday mornings.

Newton Parks and Recreation summer camps

Now is the time to register for a Newton Parks and Recreation summer camp! Check out the programs at www.newtonma.gov/gov/parks and click on Camps. You can register online at www.activityreg.com or call 617-796-1500 for more information. These programs still have openings:

  • Kids Korner ages 3 – 5.  A great introduction to summer camp. Located at the Burr Park Community Center.
  • Albemarle Acres grades 1 – 6.  Group activities and swimming at Gath Pool. Located at the Horace Mann School.
  • Centre Acres grades 1 – 6. Group activities and swimming at Crystal Lake. Located at the Newton Centre Hut.
  • Outdoor Adventure grades 2 – 6.  Outdoor discovery and canoeing. Located at Nahanton Park on the Charles River.
  • Thundercat Sports ages 7 – 12. Learn the skills to play a variety of different sports each day. Located at Pellegrini Park.
  • Specialty Camp at Peirce School grades 2 – 8.  Specialty weeks that are still open include Ultimate Frisbee (grades 2-8), Puppet Lab (grades 3-8), Beyond Beginner Chess (grades 2-8), Mad Science (grades 2-6), or Science Robotics (grades 2-6). Located at Peirce School.
  • Acres in the Falls grades 5 – 8. Choice activities with field trips and swimming at Crystal Lake. Located at the Brigham House.
  • Counselor in Training Programs grades 8 – 11. Participate in a 2 or 3 week session to develop your camp counselor skills. Programs are available at several of our camp sites.

What’s Happening at the Y

National Police Week May 12th – 18th
In honor of National Police Week,  all area police officers are invited to try the Y for free during the week. Sign a waiver at the Welcome Center and show your badge or other proof you are law enforcement and try out the facilities free of charge. Please spread the word to your family and friends in law enforcement!

Family Fun Night May 14th,  6:00 – 7:00 pm
Bring the whole family to the Y for some family fun time. Featuring arts & crafts, bouncy house, gym games and more! Free and open to all. Family Fun Nights occur on the second Tuesday of every month.

Einstein’s Workshop Summer Camp Open House

Summer Camp Open House with FREE STEM activities and refreshments!  Einstein’s Workshop will be hosting an afternoon of free STEM activities in celebration of their upcoming Summer Camp at Lasell College’s Science and Technology Center! There will be free coding challenges, programmable robots, air cannon rockets to build, and games to play (maybe even some Minecraft!) Every adventurous child goes home with a prize!
