Newton Theatre Kids

This summer, Newton Theatre Kids is excited to offer students entering grades 5-8 the opportunity to hone their theatrical abilities in a supportive and engaging environment. Each of the three intensives lasts for one week and focuses on a different genre of theater, allowing participants to develop meaningful new skills while increasing their confidence and versatility as performers. All experience levels welcome!

Week #1: Hey Little Songbird Cabaret Crew, July 6th – 10th

Week #2: Best Foot Forward Audition Bootcamp, July 13th – 17th

Week #3: Breaking Down the Bard Shakespeare Workshop, July 20th – 24th

What’s Happening at the West Suburban YMCA

Early Spring Registration is Open! Early Spring Session runs February 24th – April 19th. Sign up for swimming lessons, small fitness training classes, sports, or creative arts! Register and find out more information here.

Family Fun Night, February 11th, 6:00 – 7:00 pm. Bring the whole family to the Y for some family fun time. Featuring arts & crafts, bouncy house, gym games and more! Free and open to all. Family Fun Nights occur on the second Tuesday of every month.

February Vacation Week Programming February Vacation Week is around the corner! They offer three childcare programs from February 18th – 21th. Out of School Time Vacation Programs are structured similarly to a day at camp, with a mix of activities such as fun games, creative projects, and free swim. Sports Vacation Clinics may include soccer, basketball, baseball, swimming, and more. In addition, there are also new Creative Arts vacation programs! It’s never too early to start thinking about summer camp!

Several New Hampshire summer camps have generously donated gift cards to the Bowen PTO, and they’re auctioning them off to the highest bidders. Your child gets an amazing camp experience, you save money on summer camp, and Bowen PTO gets additional funds to continue supporting the amazing staff and programs children enjoy!

  • Camp Cody – Two Gift Cards, $1,750 each

Camp Cody welcomes boys and girls age 7-15. The gift cards can only be used by families attending the camp for the first time, and only for Session 1 (June 21st-July 4th, 2020) or Session 4 (August 2nd-15th, 2020). The winner is responsible for the difference in the cost, $2,200 and a $500 deposit is due at the time of sign-up. One gift card per family.

  • Camps Kenwood and Evergreen – One Gift Card for $1,000

Camps Kenwood and Evergreen welcome boys and girls age 8-15. The gift card can only be used by families attending the camp for the first time. The winner is responsible for the difference in cost, which will depend on the session selected.

Rock it out this summer at The Conservatory at Highlands!

Registration is now open for the Summer Rock Bands! Join one or more of the week-long summer sessions. Ensembles arranged by age and experience. Register Here!

Some highlights include:

  • Students play favorite songs and/or perform vocals in their own bands
  • Recording sessions and music videos
  • Musical games
  • Kids stay cool indoors AND have time outside at the Newton Highlands playground
  • Students perform a concert on Friday at the end of each week-long session for friends and family!
  • Bands arranged based on age and experience
  • Pictures texted throughout the week sharing all the fun moments
  • For ages 6+

What’s Happening at the Y

Free Summer Saturdays – Try the Y for free every Saturday this summer! Present a valid ID at the welcome desk and your guest fee will be waived.

Summer Membership at the Y – Perfect for college students or those visiting for the summer, the West Suburban YMCA Summer Membership that automatically expires on August 31st. $150 for an individual or $275 for a family (1 or 2 adults plus all children under age 26). Cost is prorated for anyone signing up after June 1st. For more information about summer memberships, contact the Welcome Center at 617-244-6050.

Summer Food Service Program – June 24th – August 16th – The West Suburban YMCA has been selected by the Massachusetts Department of Education as a Summer Food Service Program site. The Summer Food Service Program provides free meals to all children ages 18 and under when school is not in session. Any child in the community can show up and receive a free lunch between the hours of 12:30-1:30 pm at the West Suburban YMCA. Children attending YMCA Camp Pikati are also able to take advantage of the service while at camp.

Summer Swim Lessons for All Ages – It is never too early or too late to learn to swim. Swimming is a lifelong skill that is crucial for both kids and adults. Sign up for swim lessons at the Y, starting with classes for children as young 6 months through teen and adult classes. The Y offers options and session dates for every schedule, including lessons once per week, twice per week, or daily Monday-Friday. Summer Creative Arts Programs – Fill this summer with singing, dancing, painting, and more! With Creative Arts programs at the Y, youth can explore their creative side through group lessons, unique projects, and exploring what it means to be an artist. Get a little messy in the new Explorations! art program for ages 6-10, jam with a band in our Summer Rock Band program for ages 8+ or sing out loud with our Vocal Workshop for ages 11+. Adult Fitness Programs – Sign up for one of the Y’s summer fitness classes. Classes run for seven weeks and begin the week of July 8th. Options include TRX suspension training, Boxcon boxing conditioning class, and Metcon functional fitness and strength class. Get motivated by training with a small, dedicated group!
