Summer Learning Camps and Classes

The Chyten Center in Newton is offering a series of hands-on, real-life learning camps and classes for elementary and middle-school this summer.

Younger programs (Grades 2-5) include:
Shark Tank Jr. (Create your own business, just like on the TV show!)
Imagination Authors (Write your own novel and have it fully published)
Team Titans (Run your own baseball team and learn math in the process!)
The Literature Circle (Learn how to comprehend and analyze great children’s literature)
Discover My World (Do online research, learn Google Earth and design a “World’s Fair” with Legos)
Kids Career Time (Study, roleplay and experience five adult professions: Doctor, lawyer, architect, journalist and mayor)

Older programs (ages 11-14) include:
Writing Masters: The Muckrakers (Be part of a real newsroom and publish an online and print newspaper)
Vocabulary Masters: Drama Dictionary (Create an online video dictionary of advanced English vocabulary)

Drama camp openings

Budding actors and actresses in Newton can still join the cast of “Annie”. The popular resident youth theatre program, Newton Youth Players, has a few openings for the summer production of “Annie”. Directed by Melissa Bernstein, the morning theatre program gives children an opportunity to be part of a summerstock experience. Young actors entering grades 2 through 6 spend their mornings with professionals who specialize in drama, music, scenery design and choreography. • ways to assess your child’s readiness for camp
• questions to ask a camp’s owners and directors
• how camps extend and enrich the work going on in schools

Engineering and Logic Summer Camp

Join for a week of intellectual and engaging activities! Participate in engineering challenges, collaborate on science experiments, play strategy games, solve puzzles, create stunning origami and learn how to make balloon animals.

Looking for fun filled, hands on, educational classes for this summer? Then look no further! Newton Community Farm has an exciting array of programs for all ages that focus on being outdoors and the growing of food.

Farm Sprouts – Pre-school and Kindergarten
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, 10:00 – 11:00 am,  week of June 16th – week of August 25th. Meets weekly choose your day.

Little Diggers – Students entering Grades 1 and 2
Monday – Friday, 9:00 – 12:30 pm,  week of July 7th and Aug 4th
1 week sessions

Farmer in Training – Students entering Grades 3 – 5
Monday – Friday, 9:00 – 12:30 pm, week of July 7th – week of Aug 25th.
1 week sessions

Socially Aware Young Farmers – Students entering Grades 6 – 9.
Monday – Friday, 9:00 – 12:30 pm, week of July 14th and July 21st.

Teen Summer Program Expo

Newton South High School again hosts the annual Teen Summer Program Expo on February 3rd in the cafeteria. Admission is free.

NewtonPAC Open Board Meeting

NewtonPAC is holding a special open board meeting next week with Dr. Judy Levin-Charns, Paula Black and Maura Tynes to talk about Extended School Year (ESY) summer services for the 2014 summer season. Many parents are making decisions about summer camp now and interested in finding out what programs NPS will offer. The results of the survey done last summer on the 2013 ESY services will also be discussed.
