Summer Art Programs at the New Art Center

Tremendous Trees – June 24th – 28th – Grades 1 – 6 – $440
The colors, patterns and shapes of trees will serve as our inspiration this week. Are you sitting under a palm tree, looking up towards the top of a giant redwood, or tangled in lush jungle branches? Will you take a walk through a fairytale forest or a steaming jungle full of colorful birds, snakes and monkeys? Each week will be packed with possibilities, imagination and fun as students explore 4 exciting activities each day: 2D art (drawing and painting), 3D art (sculpture), ceramics and performing arts. Students will be divided into groups by grade. Early drop-off and extended day are available.

All About Farms – July 1st – 3rd – Grades 1 – 6 – $265
What do you think about when you hear the word, “farm”? Cows, chickens, roosters, pigs? Or rows of corn, fields of hay, beautiful red barns, tractors and tools? What about aerial views of differently planted fields of color? From hens to horses and scarecrows to weathervanes, let’s celebrate this abbreviated holiday week with a creative trip to an American farm! Each week will be packed with possibilities, imagination and fun as students explore 4 exciting activities each day: 2D art (drawing and painting), 3D art (sculpture), ceramics and performing arts. Project Oceanology Marine Science Summer Camp Opportunities

Project Oceanology is a 501(c)(3) year-round marine science and environmental education organization located at Avery Point in Groton, CT with a mission to nurture enthusiasm for science and for our planet’s marine environment. Their summer camps are licensed by the State of Connecticut, their vessel operators are licensed by the U. S. Coast Guard, and their marine educators have expertise, educational backgrounds, and extensive experience in the delivery of marine science and environmental education enrichment programs to elementary through high school students, college students, summer camp participants, and the general public.

For students entering grades 6-12, Project Oceanology is offering two residential camps this summer – Ocean Camp and a new Marine Science Research Experience. Residential campers are accommodated in a hostel for a week-long immersion in hands-on, brains-on marine science education and fun aboard research vessels, along nearby shorelines, and in  marine laboratories.

Camp Kaleidoscope Counselor Openings

Make a difference in a child’s life! Camp Kaleidoscope, the JCC’s arts and science day camp in Newton, is looking for wonderful staff who know how to make a camper’s day extraordinary. Must be available June 24th – August 16th, Monday through Friday, 8:40 am – 4:10 pm unless otherwise arranged.

Staff meetings are Monday afternoons and orientation is prior to camp. Buses are available from Cambridge, Brookline, Jamaica Plain, Framingham and Wayland. All staff enjoy a free JCC summer fitness membership. Counselors must be at least 16 years old and rising HS seniors or older, with demonstrated leadership skills and experience working with children.

Lower and Middle Camp Counselors support and nurture campers entering grades K-3 in drama, art, science, music, sports and swimming. Upper Camp Counselors work with campers entering grades 4-8, teaching or assisting in classes. Needed: Teachers for sports and games, acrobatics, knitting, and more.

Survey responses requested

UMass Amherst is working to expand access to Pre-College summer programs for high school students at the Mount Ida campus starting in the Summer of 2020.

In order to better understand the needs of the community, they are asking Newton parents to complete this Dual Credit Survey and hope to have as many responses as possible to help understand the range of classes that would best serve the needs of your students.

Dual Credit Survey

The past ten years have seen a significant expansion of opportunities for dual credit. Trusted journals — The Washington Post, Education Week, The Chronicle Of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and even National Education Association — all have raised questions about the efficacy of the growing dual enrollment trend. Nevertheless, the data remains clear: students who earn college credit while in high school:

• are more likely to graduate from high school
• are more likely to attend postsecondary education
• are more likely to persist and earn a post-secondary credential
• earn their postsecondary credentials more quickly
• are less likely to need remedial support
• transition to postsecondary with greater confidence
• save on tuition

What’s Happening at the West Suburban YMCA

Healthy Kids Day – Inspiring kids to live up to their potential by being healthy, active and engaged! Join this free family event featuring healthy games and activities. Join in for a fun afternoon including:

• Bike decorating station and bike parade
• Book swap station – bring a book to donate and swap!
• Demonstration by players from BC Football

Kids Night Out – Parents, drop off your kids for a fun Friday night with the Y’s staff. They’ll order pizza for dinner and keep the children entertained with games, swimming, movies and sports. $25 per child for Y members and $30 for the community. A 20% discount is offered per child for those with two or more children. Go out for the night and take advantage of this low-cost alternative to hiring a babysitter. Intro to Women’s Self Defense Class – The West Suburban YMCA is proud to collaborate with the Newton Police Department to host the Intro to Women’s Self Defense class. In this three-hour class, participants will learn risk reduction strategies, physical techniques and basic combative moves. During the final part of the class, the Newton Police Instructors will put on protective suits and allow participants to practice what they just learned on a moving person. This event is free to attend, but pre-registration is required as space in the class is limited.

The Etiquette Team Summer programs

The 5-day youth etiquette program is specifically developed for each age group: Mind Your Manners (grades 2-4), Etiquette for Middle Schoolers (grades 5-8), and College Prep: Professional Demeanor (grades 9-12).

The program covers topics such as improving social and communication skills, projecting confidence, combating shyness, strengthening self-esteem and leadership skills, navigating friendships, resolving conflict, understanding social cues, basic manners, table manners, and much more. The final class takes place at a local restaurant over a four-course meal where the students get to show off their newly perfected skills! The fee for the program ranges from $350 to $395.

Spring Math Festival and Open House

Come and learn more about having FUN while doing MATH. Play games, do STEM activities, solve puzzles, and win prizes!

Studio of Engaging Math is a pre-K-8 after-school math program whose mission is to cultivate students’ appreciation of mathematics by fostering intellectual curiosity, critical and logical thinking,spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills to build student confidence and self-esteem.

STEAM is a summer program for children ages 6 – 12. Broaden your child’s exposure to science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). The fun and intimate, hands-on activities of the classes strive to excite and inspire participants about STEAM, creating enthusiasm that will spill over to schoolwork and school choices in future years. Classes include introduction to programming, building and modeling, arts and crafts, logic puzzles and board games. The Studio also offers summer SAT/ACT preparation classes, Math Olympiad Circle, Chess, Coding and more.
