Girls on the Run

Girls on the Run (GOTR) – Fall Registration is open and includes both Live and Virtual options.  You can now register your 8 – 13 year old to join a Girls on the Run team this fall, to help them stay physically and emotionally healthy despite the pandemic.

GOTR has created virtual teams so that all girls can participate, regardless of school district or financial circumstances. Twice weekly, small teams of girls in grades 3 – 5 or 6 – 8 are led by trained coaches through the research-based curriculum that uses running and other physical activities to build girls’ confidence, connection, and resilience.

Newton SouthEast Little League Fall 2020 Registration Is Open

Baseball is back! Following strict safety protocols, Newton Southeast Little League is excited to return to the field for the fall season. Registration for T-Ball through Majors is still open for students who reside within or attend private or public schools within the public school district boundaries of Memorial-Spaulding, Mason-Rice, Bowen, Angier, Countryside and Zervas. Children who attend one of these schools but live out of district may participate in NSELL’s program under Little League’s 2020 rules without a waiver.

  • T ball: ages 5-6 (pre-K and K)
  • Farm: ages 7 and 8 (one division for age 7/1st grade and one division for age 8/2nd grade)
  • AA: age 9 (3rd grade)
  • AAA: ages 10-11 (4 – 5th grade)

Fall Sports Training With Social Distancing!

This Fall, Boston Athletic Training is offering speed, strength, basketball and football skills sessions for all ages in the Newton area. All sessions are outdoors and athletes are kept at 6+ feet of distance at all times during the 1 hour long small group sessions! BAT also offers 1-1 training.

What’s Happening at the West Suburban YMCA

The West Suburban YMCA is Hiring!
The Y has an immediate need for Youth Group Leaders for the Fall 2020 Out of School Time program. Youth Group Leaders will provide academic support and facilitate enrichment opportunities for K-8 students enrolled in the Y’s Out of School Time program. The Y offers generous benefits, free membership, and professional development opportunities. Program begins September 21st
This fall the Y’s Out of School Time (OST) program is offering a full day program from 7:45 am – 5:00 pm to support distance learning and complement the Newton Public Schools schedule. Families have the option to enroll their child for 5 days, 3 days, or 2 days per week. The EEC-certified Out of School Time program provides academic support, study strategies, and structured routine, as well as opportunities for physical activities and enrichment activities. Mini Sessions
Early Fall Program Session starts September 21st
The Y is offering three 4-week mini sessions this fall. Register for programs such as swimming, sports, music, and fitness! Small group and private sessions are available. All programming follows state health and safety guidelines. Visit the Y’s website for more information and registration.

YMCA Preschool Enrollment, Ages 2.9 – 5 years
Fall 2020 Program Begins September 21st
The EEC-certified Preschool Center for Youth Development at the West Suburban YMCA is accepting enrollments for Fall 2020. The program offers full day care from 7:45 am – 5:00 pm with the option to enroll 5 days, 3 days, or 2 days per week. The program has been newly structured to keep children and teachers safe and healthy amid the ongoing pandemic, with small cohorts, individual materials and student supplies, and frequent handwashing, sanitizing, and disinfecting. Sports, Swim, Music, and More
One-on-one or small group private lessons are available for many Y programs, including swim lessons, basketball, soccer, sports-specific athletic training, music lessons, and more. Instructors are highly experienced in their program areas and will tailor a program to meet your needs! Most private lessons have the option to be held indoors, outdoors, or virtually. An active and socially distant service opportunity

Join the Centre Street Food Pantry’s ‘Off the Beaten Path’ campaign! They’re looking for families who like to bike, swim, walk, or run. For every mile that you go together, you will raise money for our local pantry. Pantry staff will help you find safe routes around the city and provide all the tools you need to solicit sponsors. The West Suburban YMCA is open!

The West Suburban YMCA reopened its doors to new and existing members on July 6th, following the state’s transition into Phase 3 of its reopening plan. New protocols are in place to align with all guidelines and recommendations outlined by the CDC, state, and local health departments.

Summer Eats
Free Meals for Kids & Teens through September 4th
The West Suburban YMCA has partnered with the Metrowest YMCA to participate in Summer Eats, Massachusetts’ Summer Food Service Program. The federally funded nutrition program provides free, healthy meals to all children ages 18 and under when school is not in session. Meals are available for pick-up at the West Suburban YMCA in Newton, Monday through Friday from 12:00 – 1:00 pm (lunch) and 3:00 – 4:00 pm (snack) through September 4, 2020. Kids and teens who wish to pick up a lunch or snack should check-in at the Y’s Welcome Center.

Fall Programs

Childcare and Out-of-School Time
Preschool and Out-of-School Time are planning for Fall 2020 programming. Open Gym and Outdoor Hoop
Court A in the gymnasium is available for basketball by reservation. Reservations are 60 minutes long and limited to 1 person or 1 family/household per appointment time. Please bring your own basketball and a water bottle. To make reservations visit wsymca.org/reservations.

The Y also installed an outdoor basketball hoop in the rear parking lot for member use. Members must scan in at the Welcome Center before using the hoop and everyone must bring their own basketball. Reservations to are not required, but it is only available during certain hours.

Family Swim
The small pool is available for family swim by reservation. Reservation slots are for 30 minutes and are limited to one family/household and a maximum for 6 family members. To make reservations visit wsymca.org/reservations.

Community-driven Gym for High School kids

Bigger Muscles, Better Intentions (BMBI Fitness) is a new fitness studio helping local area kids (as well as adults) to learn more about safe ways to better their own physical fitness and provide extra opportunities through community service. Todd Miskell, a personal trainer for the past 10 years in the Newton area, provides a true “organic” feel, where the kids in the area take pride in what they’re doing.

Summer Volleyball Camp/Clinics

Tuesday and Thursday Night Doubles at Oak Hill Fields
Highly recommended for those interested in Newton South volleyball. Starting June 30th, a top program is happening right in our backyard at the Oak Hill/Brown fields. Every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, participate in a doubles clinic that will involve a lot of learning and even more playing. This program lasts for six weeks, ending August 6th.

Nothing accelerates your learning like playing lots of doubles! They’ll meet or exceed all state and city guidelines for Covid-safety in sport camps to ensure this is the safest possible.

Owls Volleyball Sand Doubles Camp
This is a full day doubles camp running at the indoor sand courts at Joust Volleyball in Norwood. There is a six week camp and a three week camp.

All safety guidelines will be followed, including screening and disinfectant stations. This is an opportunity to play a ton of sand doubles in a camp + tournament setting, and really accelerate your game. Spots are very limited. Safe, Small group and 1-1 Sport Training for athletes 8+

Throughout the summer, Boston Athletic Training is offering training sessions at Newton  North HS and Cabot Park in everything from basketball and football skills to speed and strength training. They offer 1-1 training and small groups for athletes 8+ at all levels!

Group sessions are run with good social distancing (6+ feet apart from each other and coaches) and athletes sanitizing hands between breaks. The current special offer allows new athletes to try out a group session for $30.00 or a 1-1 at the trial price of $60.00.

Want to help your Newton neighbors put food on their table?

Join the Newton Food Pantry Ride for Food team! Bike, swim, walk, run or hike for hunger. This event is virtual between May 9th and October 4th. Teens ages 14-18 years old may join with an adult.
