What else is Happening at the West Suburban YMCA

Pickleball
Join on Tuesdays from 9:30 -11:30 am and take up a new sport: Pickleball! What’s Pickleball, you ask? Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and ping-pong. All are welcome to come and try this up-and-coming sport. $5.00 drop-in fee.

Fall 2018 After School Program Registration
Enrollment for Fall 2018 Out-of-School Time at the West Suburban YMCA is open. Out-of-School Time (OST) is an engaging after-school care program for grades K-8. The school-year program follows the Newton Public School calendar, including extended hours and Early Release Days, and transportation to the Y is available from most elementary and middle schools in Newton. Harlem Rockets comedy basketball show/game

The Newton South High School Booster Club is hosting a fun-filled basketball comedy show and game. The Harlem Rockets incorporate the audience, especially children, into the show and are always available to meet the fans and give autographs after the show.

In this special event to raise money for the Newton South Booster Club, the “Teacher’s Nets,” a talented team of Newton’s finest educators, has graciously agreed to face the Harlem Rockets. Tickets for this fun-filled event can be purchased online at a discount up to the night of the event. Tickets will be available at the door on May 19th, subject to availability.

Children, students, seniors are $8.00 in advance, $10.00 at the door
Adults are $12.00 in advance, $15.00 at the door
VIP tickets are $30.00, $50.00 at the door (subject to availability)

Like to bike and want to spend more time with your teen?

How about joining together for a fun community service biking event?

The Newton Food Pantry is looking for 2 teen/parent duos to join their team for the “Ride for Food” to be held on September 23rd in Dedham. Riders must be at least 14 years old and need an adult to partner with them for all aspects of the ride including training, fundraising and the ride itself.

Interested bikers may choose to rider 10, 25 or 50 mile route. What could be better than spending time having fun with your teen while raising money to help feed our

April Vacation Programs at the Y

Spend a fun and engaging April Vacation week at the Y!  Vacation programs from the Sports and Child Care Departments offer fun and safe environments for students in grades K-8. Featuring a mix of activities to keep kids happy and healthy all day – including free swim periods throughout the day. Full and half day options and daily rates to accommodate your needs!

The West Suburban YMCA is inspiring kids to live up to their potential by being healthy, active and engaged! Join this FREE family event, featuring healthy games and activities including:

Newton Kids PMC Ride

The Newton Kids PMC Ride is back and better than ever! Get your bike ready to roll for this fantastic event. Rider and volunteer check-in begins at 8:00 am. Two-wheeled riders will zoom around a one-mile loop on Wells Avenue in Newton as many times as they can from 9:00 – 10:00 am. The 3-wheeled and balance bike crowd will tear it up on a separate tot course.

Be sure to stick around for the POST-RIDE PARTY starting at 10:00 am. There will be food, face painting, bike decorating, raffles, and more. This is a great way to get kids involved in raising money for an amazing cause. All proceeds go towards cancer research and patient support at the Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber.

Navigating the Student-Athlete College Search and Recruiting Process

If you’re a student-athlete approaching the college application process, you may be experiencing some stress. The college selection and recruiting process starts much earlier for you and can be complex and time-consuming. Instructor Nick Michael of Odyssey College Search, is here to tell you that there is a college for every student-athlete who wants to earn a college degree while playing his or her favorite sport.

Come to an overview of the college search and recruiting process and learn to successfully navigate the maze of issues facing the student-athlete. Find out what college coaches and admissions officers are looking for, and how to get their attention. Newton Girls Softball

There are still a few spots open in the Grade 1/2 and the Pre-K/Kindergarten T-Ball divisions. Newton Girls Softball welcomes players of all skill levels and will provide your daughter with an experience that fosters positive self-esteem, team spirit, and individual growth through personal achievement and as a team member.

Kindergarten Soccer

Register by April 7th for Newton Kindergarten Soccer www.KindergartenSoccer.org
Games are Saturday mornings at Oak Hill Middle School, April 28 – June 16.
The Pre-K Division is for Newton children who will enter kindergarten in Fall 2018 and the Kindergarten Division is for current Newton kindergartners.

Players are grouped with other children in their Division who will attend the same school for kindergarten, so that incoming kindergartners can meet future classmates. For 25 years, Kindergarten Soccer has been introducing children to soccer in a fun and non-competitive environment where girls and boys develop friendships, learn teamwork and gain confidence. Kindergarten Soccer is a program of the Zervas Elementary PTO.

Children who attend Burr, Franklin, Lincoln-Eliot and Horace Mann tend to enroll in Garden City Soccer, and Memorial Spaulding has its own program.

Baseball players in grades pre-K to 2nd grade

Youth baseball players pre-K to 2nd grade can still register on Newton Little League’s website www.newtonllbaseball.org Newton Little League serves players who reside within or attend private or public schools within the boundaries of Ward, Underwood, Lincoln-Eliot, Horace Mann, Peirce, Cabot, Burr, Franklin, Williams elementary schools, and provides programs for players ages 4 through 12.

The spring baseball season begins on April 25th and the opening day parade is scheduled for April 29th. Programs for younger players are based on school grade, and teams are put together based on elementary school and friend requests: T-Ball (Pre- K), Rookie  (Kindergarten), Farm (grade 1) and Single A (grade 2). There is also a Challenger division for students with special needs who wish to enjoy the game of baseball.
