What’s Happening at the Y

West Suburban YMCA’s Super Bowl Raffle! The West Suburban YMCA raffled off a Super Bowl trip package, and Newton resident Assunta (Sue) Calcagni was selected as the winner! Sue received 2 tickets to Super Bowl LIII along with airfare, lodging and ground transportation provided by New England Sports Tours. The raffle netted over $20,000 for the Y’s annual fund, which provides financial assistance for programs, services and scholarships at the Y.

Try the Y: Fridays in February are free! Present a valid ID at the welcome desk and use the facilities for the day.

Early Spring Program Registration: Registration is open for early spring session programs. Early spring session runs February 25th – April 14th. Sign up for swim lessons, youth basketball, floor hockey, fitness classes, kids yoga, tai chi, tumbling, music lessons and more.

Pickle Ball – Tuesdays & Thursdays: The West Suburban YMCA hosts drop-in pickle ball on both Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 – 11:30 am in the gymnasium. Pickle ball is free for West Suburban YMCA members and $5.00 drop-in fee for non-members.

Guided Meditation: Take a moment out of your day for this short, guided meditation that will leave you feeling relaxed, grounded and rejuvenated. Free for West Suburban YMCA members. Led by Jenni Plym in Studio A. February 9th, 9:00 – 9:30 am

Lifeguard Training and Certification Course:Become an American Red Cross certified lifeguard this February. Learn the practical skills necessary to recognize a critical situation and provide lifesaving care to individuals in the water. CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certifications are included in the course.

Weekend course: February 9th, 16th, 17th and 23rd, 11:00 am – 7:00 pm each day.
School vacation week course: February 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm each day. Students must be present for ALL days of their chosen course. Visit wsymca.org to register or call 617-244-6050.

Family Fun Night: Bring the whole family to the Y for some family fun time. Featuring arts & crafts, bouncy house, games and more! FREE and open to all. Family Fun Nights are generously sponsored by the Belmont Savings Bank Foundation and occur on the second Tuesday of every month. February 12th, 6:00 – 7:00 pm

Spring YBA (Youth Basketball Association) League: Registration is open for the Y’s spring YBA league which runs March 2nd – April 14th. YBA is a fun league for boys and girls ages 4-12 to learn and play basketball. The league is separated into four age groups: Mini (ages 4-5), Biddy (ages 6-7), Rookie (ages 8-9) and Collegiate (ages 10-12). All leagues are co-ed, and volunteer coaches are encouraged. Summer Camp Registration is Open! The West Suburban YMCA offers three summer camps: Camp Pikati at the Y, Camp Chickami in Wayland, MA and Camp Frank A. Day in East Brookfield, MA. Goals of Newton Girls Softball

  • To Teach the fundamentals of the game.
  • To Encourage development and good sportsmanship of all players through participation in a team environment.
  • To Have Fun, make new friends, and grow as a member of a team.
  • To Win enough games to feel good about the team and the season. The league makes every effort to create balanced teams,allowing for the highest level of fair competition within each grade and ensuring that players feel good about their team and the season.

2019 Registration Dates:

  • January 31st: Deadline to register without paying a late fee. 
  • February 28th: Deadline to register with guaranteed placement and pair-me-with rights. A $15 late fee will be applied.
  • February 28th: Last day to withdraw and receive a full refund. Sorry, no refunds after this date.
  • March 1st – April 15th: Still accepting registrations. Player is placed on the wait list, no pair-me-with rights, and a $15 late fee. Openings filled on a first come, first served basis.

Winter Basketball Program

Chaim Andler of Boston Athletic Training is running 2 hour basketball clinics on weekend mornings that are designed to help all young basketball players improve their skills and conditioning while also having fun! The program was set up as an 8 week program, but Chaim is offering a “drop-in” option, which means you can simply join for a day whenever you’d like.

Clinic sessions will include individual based skills work such as shooting, dribbling, passing, driving to the hoop and defense. The sessions will also have group based drills, 2v2 and 3v3 game situation drills, which help young athletes improve their basketball IQ.

For the next 2 weekends, he is offering a special for new athletes to try out his program for half the cost! This means it will be $30.00 for your first session. Contact Chaim at 857-313-8442 or chaim@bostonathletictraining.com by Thursday evening each week to opt-in for the Saturday and/ or Sunday session that weekend.

Varsity female athletes

A parent of former NPS students, who is passionate about a Harvard Medical School study examining whether there might be a unique EKG biomarker for anorexia nervosa, is looking for healthy female athletes age 14-18 in any varsity sport who could take part as normal controls in an EKG study.

The study is noninvasive, and the student gets $25.00 gift certificate to Amazon and a tour of the physiology laboratory at Spaulding Rehab in Cambridge. About Kids love learning yoga. From stretching in poses to relaxing with soft bolsters, they simply enjoy how yoga makes them feel. Adding in a bit of mindfulness with breath work and self-care, this class is a wonderful option for today’s busy kids. Tailored by the age group, these classes are led by two experienced educators and yoga teachers, Tracy Affonso who taught in Newton Public School for many years as a beloved teacher at Bowen and Amy Hrobak who is a licensed clinical social worker, has worked as a Middle School Counselor for many years and has as a special focus on adolescence in her private practice.

Little League Registration open

Registration for the 2019 Newton Little League Spring Season is now available on the league’s website www.newtonllbaseball.org. Newton Little League serves players who reside within or attend private or public schools within the boundaries of Ward, Underwood, Lincoln-Eliot, Horace Mann, Peirce, Cabot, Burr, Franklin, Williams elementary schools, and provides programs for players ages 4 through 12.

Programs for younger players are based on school grade, and teams are put together based on elementary school and friend requests: T-Ball (Pre-K), Rookie (Kindergarten), Farm (grade 1) and Single A (grade 2). In the programs for older players, teams are put together with more of a focus on competitive balance: AA (grades 3-4), AAA (grades 4-6) and Majors (ages 10-12). There is also a Challenger division for students with special needs who wish to enjoy the game of baseball.  Continue reading

Dance Jam Fitness with Hadassah Boston

Resolutions Fitness Challenge – Starts the week of January 14th
New year, new you! Sign up for the Y’s Resolutions Fitness Challenge to jumpstart your health and fitness goals for 2019. Join a team led by one of the Y’s certified personal trainers, and compete against the other teams to see whose team can lose the greatest percentage of weight and body fat during the eight week challenge.

Organized by Barbara Helfogtt-Hyett of Poemworks, the event features readings by two local poets, then guests are invited to participate in the open mic portion of evening to share their own written work. This event is free and open to the public.
