Marionette Show

For a delightful school-vacation treat, see the Tanglewood Marionettes’ production of “The Dragon King” on February 24th at the Newton Cultural Center.  In this underwater fantasy, an intrepid Grandmother journeys to the bottom of the sea to seek the Dragon King, the Ruler of the waters, and the answers to why he has forsaken the land above. With colorful sea creatures, this exciting adventure is a heart-warming tale that will thrill young and old alike.

Preschool Open House

The Suzuki Preschool of Newton will be hosting an open house on Sunday February 10th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm at the Newton Cultural Center. This is a great opportunity for parents to bring their children and explore and acquaint themselves with the program and integrated arts curriculum. You will have a chance to meet the teachers and administrators and you will also receive a guided tour of the facility. The Suzuki Preschool of Newton offers daily music instruction with Suzuki trained musicians in both large group and individual settings. 2013 Environmental Art Contest

The theme is “How our schools can help the environment!”. The contest is open to Newton students in grades 2 – 5.

Poster contest guidelines:
• Enter as an individual or in teams of 2 children
• Entries are limited to 2-dimensional posters – 12”x18”max.
• Photos & recycled collage materials may be used
• Attach the entry form (provided at http://www.greendecade.org/artcontest.html) to back of poster
• Judging will be according to grade level with one prize awarded in the after-school category

Art entries are due at one of the following locations by Friday, March 1:

• The Newton Cultural Center, 225 Nevada St. Newton
• The Mayor’s Office at City Hall, 1000 Commonwealth Ave, Newton Centre
• The New Art Centre, 61 Washington Park, Newtonville

It’s Not Just Jenna – A True Story

Please join an important presentation about understanding child sexual abuse. Gail Sommer of NCSC’s Child Assault Prevention program and Lee Doyle, of the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, will present a short film and lead a discussion.

Topics addressed will include how to recognize warning signs that a child might have been abused or that someone might be at risk to harm a child, and everyday actions that can help to make kids safer. Please note that while this program is appropriate for parents or caregivers of children of all ages, the discussion is geared to adults. Winter Vacation Sewing Camp

Kids can’t wait to have time off school but how soon does the novelty wear off for both of you? Don’t get stuck scrambling to entertain them days on end. Take a break and send the kids to sewing camp and let the fun and creativity begin!

Beginners and seasoned stitchers will appreciate the mix of fun and useful projects. Newton Sewing Studio welcomes kids as young as five and parents are more than welcome to stay and sew.

Yoga for Teens, Monday, February 11, 7pm at Newton Free Library

De-stress by taking a yoga class at the Newton Free Library! An instructor from Down Under Yoga in Newtonville will lead a session that builds strength and flexibility, while relieving the stress of daily life. The class will provide the opportunity for teens to focus on themselves in an environment that encourages a balance between pushing boundaries and accepting where they are today. The class will take place in Druker Auditorium. Bring your own mat if you have one, extra mats will be available. For grades 6-12.
