Sweeney Todd presented by Watertown Children’s Theatre

Watertown Children’s Theatre presents Sweeney Todd School Edition in the Black Box Theater, Arsenal Center for the Arts, Watertown.  Tickets are $15.00 each, general admission, and can be purchased at www.watertownchildrenstheatre.org or by calling Brown Paper Tickets at 1-800-838-3006.

Parental discretion is advised due to violence and adult content. A cast of 9th-12th graders, including Newton residents Julia Dwyer and Sam Hoban, presents this thrilling musical in an intimate black box setting. Newton High School seniors heading to college next September….need some financial support?

For the second year, Newton Girls Softball is happy to be able to offer two $1,000.00 scholarships in honor of Doug Clott and Melinda Roman. The deadline is coming, apply soon!

Eligibility requirements:
Graduating senior who lives in Newton or attends a Newton Public School, who has (1) been accepted to and is attending an institution of higher learning in the Fall of 2015, has (2) played in Newton Girls Softball recreational or Panther programs for at least three seasons, and who (3) exemplifies the values of Newton Girls Softball.

WHAT is NewtonSERVES?
NewtonSERVES is a Day of Community Service that brings together over 1,000 volunteers of all ages to complete more than 50 community projects for the benefit of numerous non-profit organizations and City of Newton departments. Volunteers work in teams on morning, afternoon or all day projects throughout the city, such as cleaning up parks, planting gardens, building and painting school bookshelves, spring cleaning at non-profit organizations and helping senior citizens. By enhancing the City of Newton’s sense of community, NewtonSERVES helps to foster a culture of year-round volunteerism.

Newton parent will run the Marathon for Understanding Our Difference

Matt Stafford, Newton parent, is running the Boston Marathon to benefit Understanding Our Differences. Understanding Our Differences (UOD) is a model, interactive disability awareness curriculum that teaches children to “see the person and not the disability.” Since 1978, the program has been successfully disseminated to more than 200 schools nationwide.

The curriculum covers Blindness and Low Vision, Deafness and Hard of Hearing, Autism, Physical Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, and Chronic Medical Conditions such as Allergic Conditions, Asthma, Diabetes, and Epilepsy.

Newton Teacher will run the Marathon for Newton Schools Foundation

Lily Eng Shine, History teacher at Newton South High School, will raise funds for Newton Schools Foundation (NSF) by running in the 2015 Boston Marathon. Support the Ligerbots on their way to the World Championships

Bright and early on the morning after the Boston Marathon, help send off the Newton LigerBots on a marathon of their own. Newton’s FIRST Robotics team begins its trek to the World Championships in St. Louis bright and early on Tuesday morning and the numbers are staggering.

We need your help in sending this team off with a smile. Come join us at 6:30 am on Tuesday, April 21st at Newton South High School, 140 Brandeis Road. We’ll be waving orange pompoms, putting LigerTails on the cars, writing messages on the windows and sending them down the road.

As a reminder, the LigerBots earned an invitation to the FIRST World Championships after being one of four teams from New England chosen to compete for the Chairman’s Award, the top award offered by FIRST. The team is also ranked 10th out of 175 registered teams in New England.

April Vacation Dance Camp with Siagel Productions

The Dance Academy of Siagel Productions in Newton has a few openings left in its April Vacation dance camp for children ages 3-8.

The Hyde Community Gym in Newton Highlands is offering a variety of free, drop-in sports for middle school students during April Vacation Week:

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday,  4:00 – 6:00 pm
Saturday,  3:00-5:00 pm

Free and open to all. Great equipment provided for indoor soccer, basketball, Spikeball, and lacrosse.

Alumni Basketball : Calling all Club Members, Past and Present!!! Starting April 30th, The John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club will be offering Community Basketball every Thursday, from 6:30-8:30 pm, Through the Newton Community Partnership.

Family Friendly

Looking for an outdoor Sunday morning family friendly activity?

On April 26th, please come to a charity Canine Walk and Family Fair to support The Carroll Center for the Blind.

The morning includes a dog walk (2 mile and 1 mile routes), cookout, face painting, photobooth, scavenger hunt, k9 demo, guide dog demo, and other fun stuff. There will be lots of awesome dogs and great kid activities. Plus free giveaway bag to the first 250 guests.

Kids are free and adults are $35.00. It’s a great chance to get outside, let the kids run around, and support a local charity. For more info go to www.carroll.org/caninewalk.
