NSF’S Annual Appeal Is Underway

For 50 years Newton Schools Foundation has supported the Newton Public Schools by providing private funding for innovative and challenging programs district-wide.

This year NSF is making a difference for Newton students through its Investing In Innovation fundraising campaign. Funds raised through the campaign are helping to ensure that NPS maintains and continues to provide pioneering programs for students and offers faculty and staff first-rate professional learning opportunities. Without these funds, NPS would be unable to expand many offerings district-wide or include students at all grade levels.

Since the campaign’s 2013 launch, Newton Schools Foundation has given the Newton Public Schools $170,000 to fund creative, dynamic, effective and up-to-date learning experiences for Newton’s diverse student population, reaching all levels of the school system – elementary, middle and high school – in areas that include:

* STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
* Sustainability
* Literacy and History
* Closing the Achievement Gap

NSF’s goal is to raise $500,000 over the next three years in order to make the greatest impact on Newton’s 12,000 students. Give today to ensure that Newton Public Schools go from Good to Great!!

Seeking Child Scientists! Opportunity to participate in Developmental Study

Harvard’s Lab for Developmental Studies investigates how children learn, use language and think. The lab is located near the Harvard Square T-station and they provide parking permits for drivers as well as $5 in travel compensation when you bring in your child.

The studies are designed as games in which children answer questions about pictures or videos. Additionally, parents may complete questionnaires about their children’s development. Parents are welcome to stay with their child for the whole session, and research assistants are available to supervise siblings. Each child receives a small toy as a “thank you.”

Interested? Call 617-496-7175 or email  ha*******@***il.com for more information about how to get involved.

Burr Playground Community Build!

Thanks to all of the efforts planning and fundraising, Burr Elementary School’s new playground is set to be built on the weekend of November 7th, 8th & 9th! The Burr community came together in an amazing way last year to raise the funds needed for what will be an incredible playground.

What they need now is help from the Newton Community at large. As ambitious as they are, they are small in numbers and could use help from other PTOs and schools to get this playground out of the boxes and up in the air! The playground will be a community build… all hands on deck (Looking for volunteers 18 and older to build on Friday and Saturday, with some wrap up on Sunday).

Please take a look at the sign up form and put yourself down for some time if you can spare a few hours.  Come together to the build as a group! Make it a family affair or bring the neighbors. Please pass the word along to family, friends, neighbors, Burr alums, coworkers, etc. Everyone is welcome! There are some non-building roles as well – coordinating the volunteers, handing out refreshments, etc.

There will also be babysitting available for school aged children. They can have a fun supervised playdate while you help build a new place for them to play! Email Bu******@***il.com to let them know you’ll be dropping your child off.
