Public Speaking Class for Kids

On Tuesdays after school in November, Newton Community Education will be hosting a public speaking class for students Grades 6-8 at the Newton South High School. This is the perfect class for kids that are trying public speaking for the first time. We play a lot of fun games and activities that create a low-pressure environment.

Still space in Adult Knitting Class

Would you like to learn to knit? Do you know the basics but are ready to move beyond a scarf? Or have you finished a couple of projects and are ready to learn some new techniques and become more confident?

Register now for an adults-only knitting class taught by an experienced teacher. In this class, beginners will develop a strong foundation of skills so that they can continue knitting many different types of projects. You’ll learn how to: cast on, knit, purl, create a border, read a pattern, identify and fix common mistakes, and bind off. More experienced knitters can expand their skills to cables, lace, chart reading, and/or socks.

Middle School After School Program

The Newton Highlands After-School Program offers an exciting option for middle school children. HASP has great activities in the Hyde Gym and at their home base in Brigham House, including art, crafts, games, gym, field trips and homework. Transportation is arranged from the middle school.

Mindful Parenting

Fall Tree Tour

Newton Cemetery arborist Robert Reardon will guide a tour showcasing the interesting variety of trees in Newton Cemetery’s arboretum. The tour will take place rain or shine and last approximately 90 minutes. Comfortable walking shoes, water and plenty of questions are recommended.

Historic Newton Walks-Newton Cemetery: An Early Public Park

Did you know that the land that Newton Cemetery occupies now was once used for pharmaceutical and leather factories? Learn about how that industrial land was developed as part of the garden cemetery movement, and why it’s important as a green space today. Follow Katy Hax Holmes of the Newton Department of Planning and Development on a walk through Newton Cemetery, featuring some of the cemetery’s most notable “residents.”

Wear sturdy walking shoes for uneven terrain. Meet in front of the chapel just inside the main gate. Parking is available on cemetery roads. Suggested donation, $10.00
