New Tween Programs @ the Newton Free Library​

If you are the parent of a ‘tween’ then you are already aware of the distinct abilities, needs and developmental differences of kids in this age category.  At the Newton Free Library they, too, recognize this unique time in life and are therefore making a serious push toward establishing tween as independent from, yet equally important as, kids and teens. Tweens definitely don’t see themselves as kids, but developmentally they are not yet teens. They need not just their own reading material, but their own programming as well.

Starting in November, the Library will offer tween-specific programs for kids in grades 5-7. Check out the newly made tween webpage and coming soon, a tween book collection.

The first gathering of TWIG, a new Tween Interest Group, will be held on November 1st at 4:00 pm. We encourage all kids in grades 5-7 to join on the 1st Tuesday of each month. This will be a group interested in contributing ideas and having a voice about tween programs, services, book collection and more! Get in on the conversation, have fun and enjoy snacks.

Free STEM Trial Class @K2 Enrichment Program’s new location!

Come to a free trial class with hands-on STEM projects. K2 Enrichment Program is a STEM/STEAM program for kids ages 5 to 10, offering after-school and weekend
workshops that focus on engineering and design, working with other children, developing responsibility and initiative, and improving communication skills. They keep class sizes
small and have a flexible registration process (each session is about 7 weeks) throughout the school year. In addition, they host birthday parties on Sundays, special events, summer workshops, and school-break drop-in workshops.

You Can Afford College If…

Financial Aid goes to the families who plan in advance–ideally before December 31st of the child’s sophomore year of high school. This course will teach you the concepts and strategies that will help you maximize your financial aid by understanding the process, and how implementing strategies may increase a family’s eligibility even if you have a “high income” or own a business. The greatest amount of financial aid goes to the families who act in the years before college.

Newton’s One-to-One Program

Newton’s One-to-One Program, our very own “Big Brother/Sister Program” has been matching wonderful high schoolers with children in grades one through five for over 30 years.

If you think your elementary aged child would benefit from a mentor in their life and you can you commit 2.5 hours each week to have your child meet with a high school mentor from November to May – consider the One-to-One Program.

Parent Advisory Council for Special Education

The Newton Parent Advisory Council for Special Education is holding its next meeting on
Running A Parent Advisory Council for Special Education: Legal requirements and ways to improve the PAC’s function. Featuring expert speaker Leslie Leslie from FCSN (Federation for Children With Special Needs),  an excellent speaker and trainer.

This is a key meeting for anyone who wants to become more involved in the PAC. It is especially recommended for anyone who is considering running for a PAC office in January 2017 elections.

Connecting to Confidence

You are invited to MEDA’s “CONNECTING TO CONFIDENCE” Breakfast

Joe Jones, BU Men’s Basketball Head Coach, will speak about building confidence, both on and off the court. You will also hear a special story of recovery from a teenage student athlete.

This breakfast will also be an opportunity to support and learn about MEDA’s new “The Sooner the Better” initiative, which will bring education and awareness programs to schools and organizations throughout the region.
