Spring sports training programs at the Hyde

Boston Athletic Training has training programs for all age groups taking place at the Hyde Center and Cabot Park in Newton.

They have drop in offerings for those who want to try out a session as well as 8 week programs for basketball, football, speed and strength training for athletes ages 8+ and recently added a “juniors” basketball program for  athletes ages 5-7.  HS sessions are all drop-in based at this time and include strength training as well.

Hospitality Homes 2021 Falmouth Road Race

Searching for people who have a passion for running and a commitment to supporting the Hospitality Homes mission. Hospitality Homes provides free (no cost) and low cost short-term housing in volunteer host homes and donated apartments for families and friends of patients seeking care at Boston-area health care organizations.

All funds raised will benefit the Hospitality Homes program. Runners will receive a guaranteed invitational entry bib & will be required to raise a minimum of $2,500.

Potential Race Scenarios:
– An in-person event (with a potentially reduced field size) – August 15th
– A hybrid event (virtual At-Home Edition and in-person with a reduced field size)
– A virtual At-Home Edition (fully virtual)

Numbers are growing but there’s still room!

Newton Girls Softball seeks girls of all experience levels to learn about and play softball together while forging friendships and fostering fun. The Rec program welcomes Newton girls in grades K-7. For information and to register visit www.newtongirlssoftball.org.

Sign up with a friend by midnight on February 28th to take advantage of your “pair me with” rights. Each player is allowed to request one person (and only one) to be paired with on the same team. It may be a friend, sister, or car-pool buddy.

To be fulfilled, both players must list each other on their registration forms, and both forms must be received by March 1st. See Policies and Guidelines for additional details.

From March 1st to April 15th registration will still be open. Player is placed on the wait list, no pair-me-with rights, and a $15 late fee. Openings filled on a first come, first served basis.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) Spring Registration is open

Girls on the Run (GOTR) Spring Registration is open and includes both In-Person and Live, Online Options.  You can register your 8-13 year old to join a Girls on the Run team, to help them stay physically and emotionally healthy despite the pandemic.

Some teams are school-specific (Angier, Bowen, Brown, and Mason-Rice) and others are open to all girls, regardless of school (the “All Newton” outdoor Newton Centre team and online “Team Leadership” & “Team Connection”).

Twice weekly, small teams of girls in grades 3-5 or 6-8 are led by trained coaches through the research-based curriculum that uses running and physical activity to build girls’ confidence and resilience and has reached over 2 million girls nationally.

Yoga for Kids, Middle School and Families

Local, independent yoga studio Artemis Yoga is offering new classes starting in March for kids and middle school girls plus a weekend family yoga class too. Most of the classes are hybrid (choice of an in-person class in Watertown or an online class).

1. Kids Yoga for Grades K – 4  Online Only
March 4th – April 15th, 3:30 – 4:15 pm – Registration fee: $112
School looks and feels different for our kids this year. Yoga and mindfulness afterschool can help kids navigate it all!

2. Yoga & Mindfulness for Girls Grades 5 – 8 Online or In-Studio

Newton Youth Hockey registration and tryouts for 2021/22

Registration is open for next season’s travel hockey program. NYH will have Girls teams at the U10 and U16/18 age groups, Boys Midget (high school) teams, and co-ed teams for ages 5 through 14.

Tryouts for co-ed travel teams will take place the weeks of March 15th and 22nd. Tryouts are not required for Midget, Girls U16/U18, or Girls U10 players. However, U10 girls are welcome and encouraged to attend the tryout session for their co-ed age group.
