Former Celtic Chris Herren To Speak About Substance Abuse – Wed., Mar. 13, 7:30-9PM

Newton’s high school students and their parents are invited to the John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club of Newton at 7:30PM on Wednesday, March 13 to hear the amazing story of former Boston Celtic Chris Herren. The presentation is free to the first 500 who register. Click here to reserve your seat. Do not miss this chance to hear a local basketball legend describe his journey from high school phenom to the NBA,

his gradual descent into substance abuse, and his resurrection as an activist for sobriety. Herren, who is from Fall River, MA, has been featured on 60 Minutes, was part of ESPN’s “30 for 30″ series in a documentary called “Unguarded” and has written an autobiography, “Basketball Junkie“. His presentation offers a very powerful message to students and student-athletes about dealing with success, dealing with adversity, dealing with situations that come in the community, the classroom, and on the playing field.

Substance abuse is more prevalent in our community than many people think. The Boys & Girls Club is committed to helping young people make healthy choices.

Do you want to help?

Do you want to help feed hungry people in Massachusetts?  Food insecurity is a very real problem—over 750,000 people (many of them children and elders) experienced some kind of hunger in Massachusetts last year.  Project Bread works with 430 community food programs to provide more than 61 millions meals a year to hungry people.  Project Bread is also working to improve the quality and sustainability of Massachusetts food programs, especially in schools, so that a healthy and nutritious lifestyle can be available to everyone.  Because Project Bread believes that the opposite of hungry isn’t full, it’s healthy.

But what can you do?  You have the ability to change

the world, just by taking a few steps.  Visit www.projectbread.org/walk to get more information, register an individual or a team of walkers, or sign up to volunteer.  Join over 40,000 people on Sunday, May 5th as we walk 20 miles around Boston, raising almost $4 million to help feed hungry people throughout Massachusetts.  We can’t do it without you.
