Newton Library: Unleash Your Inner Filmmaker, Nov. 19

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to be a world renowned film maker? Robert Gerst’s new first-of-its-kind book, Make Film History: Rewrite, Reshoot, and Recut the World’s Greatest Films, and the accompanying hands-on webs

ite, is for every movie lover who has ever asked, “How did they do that?” or said, “I’d like to make a movie, too!” Join him on Monday, November 19 at 7:30 pm for a talk that will show you how you unleash your inner artist and learn to rework and re-edit landmark films. During the talk Gerst will outline moments when imaginative filmmakers from Georges Mèliès to James Cameron advanced the art of film from nineteenth century photography to the digital epics playing in today’s multiplex theaters. He will also briefly demonstrate how, by using the book’s webpage, film aficionados can rework and re-edit landmark movies. Watch, second-guess, or do it yourself, as the building blocks of movies emerge. Make Film History! The talk will be followed by a book signing. Robert Gerst brings hands-on experience to contemporary arts education. A former Alderman, he is Chairman of the Newton Community Education Commission, and at Massachusetts College of Art he is Chairman of the Liberal Arts Department and teaches classroom-based and online courses in film history, film aesthetics and literature.

Feeding Children with Food Allergies – Thursday, Nov. 15

Meet the Author of New Memoir about Raising a Child with Food Allergies

Susan Weissman, author of a new memoir about the trials and triumphs of raising a child with food allergies, will read from her book and lead a discussion on Thursday,

Nov. 15 at 7:00PM at the Metro-Boston Allergy and Asthma Educational Support Group, which meets at 7:00PM at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. The program is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, New England Chapter (AAFANE).

“Feeding Eden” is a mother’s story of how childhood food allergies affected the life of her son and her family. Topics covered by the book include: becoming her son’s health care advocate; investigating various treatments; attempts to find safe yet satisfying food for her family, her struggles to convey the severity of her son’s health issue without sounding “crazy,” and how she has maintained her own sanity. Weissman lives in New York City and writes for The Huffington Post, Psychology Today, Allergic Living, and various websites. Discounted copies of “Feeding Eden” will be available for sale at the meeting.

“This is a great opportunity to meet a parent who has put into writing what so many of us have experienced or are now going through,” says Cindy Aswad, volunteer leader of the group. “Susan’s book is honest and funny; it should be a wonderful discussion.”

AAFA New England organizes educational support group programs throughout the region, publishes a newsletter, and runs a telephone resource and referral line for people coping with allergies and asthma.
