What’s Happening at the Y

National Police Week May 12th – 18th
In honor of National Police Week,  all area police officers are invited to try the Y for free during the week. Sign a waiver at the Welcome Center and show your badge or other proof you are law enforcement and try out the facilities free of charge. Please spread the word to your family and friends in law enforcement!

Family Fun Night May 14th,  6:00 – 7:00 pm
Bring the whole family to the Y for some family fun time. Featuring arts & crafts, bouncy house, gym games and more! Free and open to all. Family Fun Nights occur on the second Tuesday of every month.

Research study oppportunity for students

Scientists at the Neuroendocrine Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital are seeking particpants for the CARE Study. The CARE Study investigates the relationship between ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) and hormones and regions of the brain. ARFID is characterized by eating a limited volume or variety due to taste selectivity, low appetite, or fear of aversive consequences such as choking or vomiting. They are looking for people who have ARFID and those who do not have any eating difficulties at all between the ages of 10-22 years old.

As a healthy control participant, there are two visits. First, the screening visit is approximately 3.5-4 hours and can be scheduled for any weekday at almost any time. During this visit, you will review the consent with our nurse practitioner, complete a brief history and physical exam, meet with nursing and nutrition to take a small blood draw, and finish the visit with an interview and questionnaires. The second visit is a full day visit lasting from 6:30am to 1:30 pm. This visit includes two different MRI scans, questionnaires, an interview, a smell and taste test, and an IV is placed in the morning because there will be blood draws throughout the visit. Once you complete the second visit you will earn up to $290.

Einstein’s Workshop Summer Camp Open House

Summer Camp Open House with FREE STEM activities and refreshments!  Einstein’s Workshop will be hosting an afternoon of free STEM activities in celebration of their upcoming Summer Camp at Lasell College’s Science and Technology Center! There will be free coding challenges, programmable robots, air cannon rockets to build, and games to play (maybe even some Minecraft!) Every adventurous child goes home with a prize! Each week will be packed with possibilities, imagination and fun as students explore 4 exciting activities each day: 2D art (drawing and painting), 3D art (sculpture), ceramics and performing arts. Students will be divided into groups by grade. Early drop-off and extended day are available.

From hens to horses and scarecrows to weathervanes, let’s celebrate this abbreviated holiday week with a creative trip to an American farm! Each week will be packed with possibilities, imagination and fun as students explore 4 exciting activities each day: 2D art (drawing and painting), 3D art (sculpture), ceramics and performing arts. They’re hosting 3 last open houses which are a terrific opportunity for parents of 5th graders to learn more about the program as they plan for the next school year and see the wonderful space that is the home base of this terrific program. Newton Community Preservation Committee meeting – May 14th

The Community Preservation Program website now includes the pre-meeting packet for the CPC meeting and a link to a new, 8-question community survey.

10th Annual SEPAC Special Educator Awards!

The SEPAC Special Educator Awards are presented to Newton faculty and staff members who have done exceptional work with students receiving special education services.

Parents, guardians and students may nominate any NPS staff member who they believe has gone above and beyond in their work with special education students (ie: special ed staff, regular ed staff, principals, aides, BT’s, administrative staff, custodians, crossing guards, etc).

Please note that the awards do not identify you or your child by name; only the honoree is given the name of the person who nominated him/her.

Newton PorchFest 2019 – June 1st

Come enjoy PorchFest! Newton PorchFest is an afternoon of free music performances on porches, front lawns and driveways around the city on Saturday, June 1st. PorchFest 2019 will include the villages of Auburndale, Lower Falls and Waban where over 100 musical acts will be performing from 12 Noon to 6:00 pm.

Gather family and friends, grab a blanket or chair and stroll the neighborhoods enjoying a wide variety of musical styles. There will be Jazz, Pop, Rock, Funk, R&B, Classical, Barbershop and more!
