“Please Sir, I want some more”…

There are still a few spots open for the Newton Youth Players’ summer theatre program production of “Oliver!”.

The first rehearsal will take place on June 27th at Newton City Hall in the War Memorial Auditorium. Rehearsals are from 9:00 a.m. – noon, giving ample time to work on choreography, scenery and props production. The subsequent rehearsals and performance will be at Franklin Elementary School, 125 Derby Street in Newton. The performance is July 17th. Please register at www.newtonyouthplayers.com

For those looking for a full day of theatrical experience, there is a wonderful companion afternoon program “Choices” from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Directed by Marlene Fereshetian and Ruth Housman, it is an original story building program, using music, humor, magic, dance and art. Vigil for victims of Boston Marathon attacks

Mayor Warren welcomes all residents to attend a vigil tonight to come together as a community, and show support for the victims of Monday’s tragic events.

Russian Cultural Festival, April 19-21

A three-day “From Russia With Arts and Culture” Russian Festival returns to the Newton Cultural Center for a second year from April 19 – 21, with a weekend packed full of Russian artists, musicians, food, dances, costumes, demonstrations and a film screening and discussion.

The Festival opens on Friday, April 19th from 5pm – 9pm with a painting exhibition from the From Russia With Art Gallery, and musical performances including soprano Yelena Dudochkin and violinist Vera Rubin. There will be appetizers from local Russian restaurants and the screening of the award-winning film “Second Life – Boston”.

On Saturday from 10am – 7pm and Sunday from noon – 6pm, you can fully immerse yourself in Russian culture with discussions, demonstrations, stories, songs, dances, fashion and jewelry shows and browse unique Russian souvenirs for sale.

The Festival is sponsored by the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs and Newton Community Pride and their generous sponsors. Admission is free, but please bring a donation for the Newton Food Pantries.

Volunteers needed for Newton at Home

Newton at Home (NAH) is a non-profit member organization that helps Newton senior citizens live independently and safely in their homes.  Most of the services are provided by volunteers, and so we need your help.  We need drivers and those who can do chores around the house for seniors who can’t do these things on their own.

NAH is also looking for help with the upcoming Intergenerational Walk Around Newton City Hall, Sunday, April 14th at 10:30 am.  Volunteers are needed to line the route, help with warm-up exercises, etc.  Please contact NAH today to volunteer: 617-795-2560 or by email.

Come share your creations with a booth at Waban Village Day, Sunday, May 19, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. This is the 9th Waban Village Day and it takes place in Waban Square on Woodward Street, right off of Beacon Street. This is a very popular event, fun for the whole family, with over 2,000 people participating in rides, food and crafts and local entertainment. April Vacation program, Swingin’ Safari

Spring is in the air, and that means April Vacation is just around the corner! Watertown Children’s Theater has opened up their April Vacation program, Swingin’ Safari, to fifth graders! Co-produced by WCT and arsenalARTS, it will be a week of drama, music, and visual art that is not to be missed!

Newton at Home volunteers needed

Join the Parade

Newton Veteran’s Council, the organizers of the city’s annual Memorial Day Parade, is looking for any schools interested in putting together a float, a marching band, or any other kind of organized group that can march in, or otherwise participate in, the parade.

This year, the parade will be held on Sunday, May 19. The parade typically commences at 2:00 pm and marches through Auburndale and Nonantum. The route is about a mile in length.

NPS FY14 Budget Public Hearing April 4th

Thursday, April 4th, at 7:00 p.m. the NPS FY14 Budget, Public Hearing will be held at the Education Center, 100 Walnut St, Room 210.

The School Committee invites all residents to come and voice their feedback, comments and/or concerns. If you’re not able to attend the meeting, it can be viewed online – http://www.newtv.org/video/gov-programs/newtv-government-live-stream/ or on any of the following cable stations: Comcast Ch.9, RCN Ch.13, Verizon Ch. 33.
