Lily Eng Shine, History teacher at Newton South High School, will raise funds for Newton Schools Foundation (NSF) by running in the 2015 Boston Marathon. Her goal is to raise $5,000 for NSF to support innovative educational programs across the Newton Public Schools. To donate to Lily’s Marathon Run visit www.newtonschoolsfoundation.org
Marathon running is a passion for Lily. She completed her first marathon in 2009 with the Dreamfar High School Marathon team. She is currently a Dreamfar Team Leader and will train for Boston alongside her Dreamfar students and colleagues who will run the Providence Marathon in May. “Challenging high school students to reach their full potential through hard work, perseverance, and commitment, is a rare and deeply fulfilling opportunity to take teaching beyond the classroom,”said Shine. “I am thrilled that NSF has given me the opportunity to run the Boston Marathon and commit to the hard work and training and be a role model for our students,” she said.
NSF is committed to expanding opportunities for all students in the Newton Public Schools schools. In 2015, NSF-supported programs include initiatives in the areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), sustainability, literacy, social/emotional health, professional development and closing the achievement gap.
“We’re thrilled that Lily is running for NSF. Her commitment to Newton’s students as both a teacher and Dreamfar team leader, and her passion for running, make her the perfect person to represent NSF in this year’s Boston Marathon,” said Marcia Tabenken, NSF co-president.
